Introduction: Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) pioneered abstract painting ahead of her contemporaries. Her paintings largely reflect spiritual and philosophical concepts. Swan No. 9 is part of her "Paintings for the Temple" series, which explores various dimensions of human existence. 

Image Description and Analysis: 

This painting represents a spiritual journey. This journey progresses from duality towards unity. Various elements seen in the painting help in understanding the mind's transformation journey. 

• Division: There is a subtle, indistinct line in this painting. The painting is symmetrical about this line. This line initially represents the division between life and death, but as we look deeper into the painting, this division fades away. 

• Right Side: Our Present State: The large crystals on the right side represent how we generally are - seeking proof and certainty, even though we know that nothing is permanent. Seeking permanence in the impermanent (body) indicates human ignorance. In this state, man is far from equilibrium. 

• Left Side: As we look towards the left side, the crystals become smaller, indicating a shift away from the intensity of overwhelming thoughts, but there is no change in state. Abandoning thoughts is crucial to discovering the truth. 

• Unity: As we go further towards the left, the crystals become even smaller and turn into dots. Old thoughts and ego are completely wiped out. This is the beginning of liberation. The two sides of life and death are joined by beams of light. Also observe how the colors of those beams of light transition from white to black (and also from black to white). A bright, flower-like shape is shown where the two meet. Also note that the dividing line is not shown after the depiction of the dots.

• Balance: In the far left part, the painting expresses a state where action and its response are one, true seeing means understanding that what appears separate (birth and death) are forms of the same truth. 

• Freedom: Overcoming the conflict created by division is a key skill. Being able to see from a silent mind.

Swan No. 9 uses symbols to explain how, through a change in consciousness, we can journey from a divided way of experiencing the world to a unified way. This painting represents the spiritual journey, liberation from the ego, and the attainment of ultimate truth.
