4. ఇన్ని చదవనేల
Annamacharya weaves magic with words to enthral the audience. In
this hard-hitting VERSE, he underlines the importance of single minded devotion
(to God) for liberation. In this simple, but epochal presentation, he wonders
why mankind gets engaged in search of theories and books to realise God. He
notes that the first and last step to liberation is oneself, not outside
power.
In this he depicts
how man gets torn between the opposites of YES (worldly pleasures) and NO (path
to salvation). Arguably, most of us pursue both. Therefore, MAN remains in
confusion and is unable decide (his mind) is the central concept.
Finally he
questions the idea of this world and other world, asserting that these two are
one and the same and the man gets baffled by conceptual illusions.

కన్నుదెరచుటొకటి కనుమూయుటొకటి

meaning:
ఇన్ని(inni) = so many; చదువను chaduvanu = read; ఏల (Ela)= why; ఇంత (yiMtA) = so much; వెదకను (vedakanu) = search, seek; ఏల (Ela) = why; కన్నుదెరచుట (kannu derachuTa) = opening eyes
(birth); ఒకటి (okaTi) = one thing; కనుమూయుట (kanumUyuTa) = closing the eye (death); ఒకటి (okaTi) = another thing;
Literal Meaning: Why read much? Why search much?
Opening of eyes ( birth) and closing of eyes (death) are two instances in the
life. (These are the only tangible realities to this world)
Comments: By stating inni chaduvanEla (ఇన్ని చదువనేల) or yiMtA vedakanEla (ఇంత వెదకనేల) he is implying that there is no need for these. He implied that these pursuits will only waste time.

సిలుగులీ రెంటికిని చిత్తమే గురియౌను
వలెనంటె బంధము వలదంటె మోక్షము
తెలిసి విజ్ఞానులకు తెరువిది యొకటే ||ఇన్ని||

meaning:
వలెను (valenu) = కావాలి, want; అనేదొకమాట (anE dokamATa) =
that one word; వలదు
(valadu) = వద్దు, don't want; అనేదొకమాట (anE dokamATa) =
that one word; సిలుగులు (silugulu) = కష్టములు, travails; ఈ (II)= these; రెంటికీని (reMTikini)
= for the two (contradictory); చిత్తమే (chittamE) = mind, heart; గురియౌను (guriYaUnu) = torn between, subjected to; వలెను (valenu) = కావాలి, want; అంటె బంధము (amTe baMdhamu) = hence binding; వలదు (valadu) = don't want; అంటె (amTe)= hence; మోక్షము(mOkshamu) = liberation; తెలిసి (telisi)= sensing, Knowing; విజ్ఞానులకు (vij~nAnulaku) = for the wise; తెరువు (teruvu)= మార్గం, path; ఇది (idi) = this; యొకటే (yokaTE)= one (way)
Literal Meaning:
One word is
"Yes". Another is "No". The mind gets torn between these
opposites Yes and No. Want ("Yes”) leads to bondage, don't want
("No") to liberation. The wise know that
there is only one path.
The man continues to pursue best of both worlds. In this process gets
twisted between these opposites Yes and No. There are NO two paths. The wise know that there is only one path.1, 2
1 In Bhagavadgita, verse 2-41 also indicates the same ( vyavasAyAtmikA Buddhir tYekEha) that “there is only one path”. The Summary of the verse is”unwavering mind is the only way. The intelligence of those who are irresolute is many-branched. Therefore they continue to baffle the man“
శ్రీ భగవానువాచ: శ్లో || వ్యవసాయాత్మికా బుద్దిరేకేహ కురునందన । బహుశాఖా హ్యనంతాశ్చ బుద్ధయోఽవ్యవసాయినామ్ ।। 41 ।। భావము: అర్జునా! ఈ యొగంలో నిశ్చలమైన బుద్ధి ఒక్కటే యేక కారణంగా ప్రకాశిస్తుంది. నిశ్చయ వివేకం లేని వారి జ్ఞానము అనేక భేదాలతో అనంత ముఖాలుగా వుంటుంది.

చ|| పుట్టెడిదొకటే పోయెడిదొకటే
తిట్టమై రెంటికిని దేహమే గురియౌను
పుట్టుట సంశయము పోవుట నిశ్చయము
వొట్టి విజ్ఞానులకు వుప మిది వొకటే ||ఇన్ని||

Word to word meaning: పుట్టెడిది (puttedidi)= birth; ఒకటే (okaTE)= same; పోయెడిది (pOyeDidi)= death; ఒకటే (okaTe) = same; తిట్టమై (tiTTamai) = ఆశ్రయమై, being the abode; రెంటికిని (reMTikini) = for these two; దేహమే (dEhamE) = body; గురియౌను (guriYaUnu) = torn between, subjected to; పుట్టుట (puTTuTa) = (re)birth; సంశయము (saMSayamu) = doubtful; పోవుట (pOvuTa) = death; నిశ్చయము (niSchayamu) = certain; {ఒట్టి (voTTi) = కలుషితం కాని, pure} ఒట్టి విజ్ఞానులకు (voTTi vij~nAnulaku) = నిష్కల్మషమైన వివేకులు, for disinterested viewer, to pure & unadulterated intelligent persons; ఉపము (upamu)= ఉపాయము, method, way, strategy, instrument; ఇది (idi)=this; ఒకటే (okaTE) = only one.
Literal meaning: Birth is one. Death is one. Body is subjected to
these inevitable facts. Rebirth is doubtful. Death is certain. The learned that
know there is only one path.
Implied meaning:
The material body is subjected to transformation from Birth to death.
Death is certain, but not rebirth. Therefore the
learned KNOWS THAT THERE IS ONLY A WAY i.e. to escape
rebirth. (Such a person would want to
avoid this vicious cycle of life and death). Verily, the learned can clearly see this truth.
Comments: Annamacharya used the word ఒట్టి విజ్ఞానులు (voTTi vij~nAnulu) to indicate pure, unaldultrated, disinterested viewer. Of course such persons are very rare. (Refer to books of Jiddu Krishnamurti, who also stressed most of his time on pure, unadulterated observation)

శరణాగతులకెల్ల సతమీతడొకడే ||ఇన్ని||

పరము (paramu)= the world beyond the temporal world; అనేది(anEdi)= said one; ఒకటే (okaTE) = only one; ప్రపంచము (prapaMchamu) = the actual world (we live); ఒకటే (okaTE) = same; సిరులనీ (sirula nI)= విశిష్టమైన, special; రెంటికిని (reMTikini) = for these two; జీవుడే (jIvuDE)= man, largely representing man's desire to get the best of both worlds; గురియౌను (guriYaUnu) = torn between, subjected to; ఇరవు (yiravu)= నెలవు, abode; వేంకటేశుడు (vEMkaTESu Du) = the Lord of seven hills; GOD; ఇహపరముల (ihaparamula) = this world and beyond that; కర్త (karta) = creator; శరణాగతులకెల్ల (SaraNAgatulakella) = for all those who seek refuge; సతము (sataMu) = శాశ్వతము, permanent, eternal; ఇతడు (itaDu)= God; ఒకడే (okaDE)= only one.
Literal
Meaning: The Other World is one.
This world is also the same. Unable to comprehend these two worlds are one and the same, the
man gets torn. For the seekers, VENKATESWARA is the permanent abode and the
eternal one.
Implied meaning:
Man gets bewildered with the postulated ideas of this world
and the OTHER world. There is no
distinction between this world and the one beyond that. There is only one
ultimate truth, GOD IS ETERNAL. Seek refuge in the GOD to align and
dispel those theoretical aberrations.
Comments: This is the most modern out look of
Annamacharya. He said, for the person in pure devotion, there is no distinction
of this world and the great beyond. He propagated devotion (meditation) more
than anything else.
