ANNAMACHARYA

Introdcution: One of the fundamental assumptions we ordinarily live with is the division between "I" and "my mind." We naturally speak as though there is an independent "I" that observes, controls, disciplines, and changes the mind. We say, "I changed my mind," "I controlled my mind," or "I must train my mind." This division is so familiar that we rarely question its basis.

kaMchUM gAdu peMchU gAdu kaDubeluchu manasu
yeMcharAdu paMcharAdu yeTTidO yImanasu
pallavi

Word to word meaning: కంచూఁ గాదు (kaMchUM gAdu) = it is neither bell metal; పెంచూఁ గాదు (peMchU gAdu) = neither your pet; కడుఁబెలుచు (kaDubeluchu) = కాఠిన్యము, దయలేమి, very hard, cruel; మనసు (manasu) = mind; యెంచరాదు (yeMcharAdu) = not possible to count/reckon/think/opinion/consider/judge/ imagine; పంచరాదు (paMcharAdu) = not possible to devide/share; యెట్టిదో (yeTTidO) = what kind of thing; యీ మనసు (yI manasu) = this mind.

Literal Meaning: The vicious mind is neither made of bell metal nor can be compelled to be your pet. We can’t imagine what it is.  And not possible to share what’s going on in the mind.

Implied Meaning: The cruel mind can’t be polished or made to behave as you want. Neither we can judge its depth nor share what’s going on in the mind.

Comments: Annamcharya, five hundred years ago said, we don’t understand our mind. Probably, the same statement is being made even today. Therefore he is very accurate.

Further, he says we cannot tutor it. This is a very significant observation. Probably, it is the single reason for the chaos we observe in the world. Jiddu Krishnamurti very often said that meditation is order and all other activities are NOT.

This is not an isolated statement. Annamcharya continues to assert this nature of mind in thousands of poems.

kaMchU

Word to word meaning: పట్టఁ బసలేదు (paTTa basalEdu) = to catch it does not have residence; చూడ బయలుగాదీమనసు (chUDa bayalugAdImanasu)  to observe it does not get open;  నెట్టనఁ బారుచునుండు (neTTana bAruchunuMDu) = it may move/flow anyway/ any direction; నీరూఁ గాదీమనసు (nIrU gAdImanasu)  = yet it is not  water (a  liquid); చుట్టిచుట్టి పాయకుండుఁ  (chuTTichuTTi pAyakuMDu) =  it circles around Constantly (without intermission); జుట్టమూఁ గాదీమనసు = చుట్టమూఁ గాదీమనసు  (juTTamU gAdImanasu = chuTTamU gAdImanasu) = its neither your relation; యెట్టనెదుటనే వుండు yeTTaneduTanE vuMDu) = it’s in front of you; నేఁటిదో యీమనసు  (nETidO yImanasu) = what kind of thing is this mind?

Literal Meaning: We can’t catch, for it has no specific place of dwelling. It doesn’t reveal itself for inspection/introspection. It moves here and there and in all directions, yet it’s not a liquid. It circles your thoughts, but not a relation. It’s in front of you. But know not what kind of thing this mind is.

kaMchU

Word to word meaning: రుచు లెల్లాఁ గానుపించు (ruchu lellA gAnupiMchu) = it makes you aware of all the tastes;  రూపు లేదు మనసు (rUpu lEdu manasu) = yet it doesn’t have a shape; పచరించు నాసలెల్లాఁ (pachariMchu nAsalellA)  = (పచరించు = ఏర్పఱుచు, గోచరింపచేయు, తపించు)  rakes up all the desires; బసిఁడి గాదీమనసు (basiDi gAdImanasu) = yet is not gold; యెచటాఁ గరఁగదు (yechaTA garagadu) = it does not melt for any thing; రాయీఁ గాదు మనసు (rAyI gAdu manasu) = neither it is a stone;  యిచటా నచటాఁ దానే (yichaTA nachaTA dAnE) = it is here and there as well; యేఁటిదో యీమనసు  (yETidO yImanasu) = what kind of thing this mind is?

Literal Meaning: The mind makes aware of all the tastes; yet it does not have a shape. Though not made of gold, it rakes up the desires. It does not melt for anything, neither it is stone. It’s there everywhere for the beholder. What kind of thing this mind is?

Comments: See how clear the mind of Annamcharya is!

Word to word meaning: తప్పక నాలో నుండు (tappaka nAlO nuMDu) = I know it is inside me; దైవముఁ గాదు మనసు (daivamu gAdu manasu) = I know it is not god; కప్పిమూఁటగట్టరాదు  (kappimUTagaTTarAdu) = it can’t covered ( by a blanket etc.) and folded into a bundle; గాలీఁ గాదు మనసు (gAlI gAdu manasu) = its not air; చెప్పరానిమహిమల (chepparAni mahimala) = (with the help of) indescribable miracles of; శ్రీవేంకటేశుఁ దలఁచి (SrIvEMkaTESu dalachi) = by remembering lord Venkateswara;  యిప్పుడిన్నిటా గెలిచె (yippuDinniTA geliche) = I am able to win; నేఁటిదో యీమనసు (nETidO yImanasu) = what kind of thing this mind is?

Literal Meaning: I know it is inside me, but it’s not god. It can’t be covered (by a blanket etc.) and folded into a bundle, but it’s not air. (With the help of) indescribable miracles by remembering lord Venkateswara (the GOD), I am able to win. Yet I know not what kind of thing this mind is.

Comments: This verse alone can be show cased as great observation powers of Annamacharya.

CLOSING THOUGHTS: When one remembers that this keertana was composed in the fifteenth century, its depth becomes even more remarkable. Questions that continue to engage psychology and philosophy even today are presented here, not as theories, but as direct observations. For this reason, the keertana transcends its historical period and continues to speak directly to the modern reader.

The greatness of this keertana lies not merely in its poetry. It is not an attempt to define the mind; rather, it invites us to examine every concept upon which our definitions of the mind ordinarily rest. In each stanza, Annamacharya introduces a familiar comparison only to gently set it aside, leaving us finally with the same unanswered question: "What indeed is this mind?" This is, therefore, not a keertana to be read once and concluded, but one to be revisited and contemplated again and again.

When read alongside verses 6.24–26 of the Bhagavad Gita, this keertana reveals an even deeper significance. While Krishna directs our attention to observing the movements of the mind, Annamacharya takes a step further back and questions the very basis upon which we conceive of the mind itself. One points toward the practice of observation; the other questions the assumptions from which observation begins. Together, they lead us away from ready-made explanations and toward direct inquiry. That, perhaps, is the enduring significance of this extraordinary composition.

ANNAMACHARYA

Annamayya is deeply concerned about the life. He describes that each and every living form before it gets manifested, passes through untold adversities. Once, into this world, it normally conforms to generally accepted behaviour.

Then, there definitely exists “others” who understands vanity of such life and moves beyond the good and bad deeds. These men observe their own vanities and engage in search of God and don’t look for temporal results. Those get ecstasy.

The central idea of this verse is that we are living our life on the surface, not looking deeper.

dibbalu veTTuchu dElina didivO

Word to word meaning: దిబ్బలు వెట్టుచు (dibbalu veTTuchu) = crossing hillocks (implying crossing  hurdles); దేలిన దిదివో (తేలినది ఇదివో) (dElina didivO) = surfaced thus; ఉబ్బు నీటిపై నొక హంస (ubbu nITipai noka haMsA) = a swan on warm waters of the womb.

Literal meaning: By Crossing various obstacles, a Swan appeared on the warm waters of the womb.

Implied meaning: Each and every life that is delivered into this world is precious and has a purpose. And treat it the same way.

Comments:  Here Annamayya is deeply aware living beings face many hurdles from the very inception to coming out of the mother's womb. (This is a five hundred year old verse!!).

anuvuna gamalavihAramai nelavai
vonari vunnadide voka haMsA
maniyeDi jIvula mAnasasarasula-

||dibbalu||

Word to word meaning: అనువున (anuvuna) = comfortably,  కమల విహారమె (gamalavihAramai) = Lotus (The one born in mud); amusement/pleasure;  నెలవై=నెలవు+అయ్ (nelavai) = being abode/dwelling; ఒనరియున్న దిదె = ఒనరియున్నది+ఇదె (vonari vunnadide) = being arranged thus; ఒక హంస (voka haMsA) = one swan; మనియెడి (maniyeDi) = existing; జీవుల (jIvula) = living beings; మానస సరసుల (mAnasasarasula) =minds of connoisseur వునికి నున్న దిదె (vuniki nunna dide) = being made dwelling; ఒక హంస (voka haMsA) = one swan.

Literal meaning: one swan made itself comfortable and stayed in the lotus flowers (which are normally born in muddy waters and generally intoxicating and gets hooked, therefore remains there) and then there exists a swan, which makes its dwelling behind the minds of connoisseurs.

Implied meaning: Most swans get used to sensual feelings and lead a life in pursuit of the comforts and desires. Yet, there are other swans, which live to realize what is behind the minds of connoisseurs ( great sages).

Comments: Annamacharya is hinting that most of us don’t understand ourselves. However, there are those who understand illusions created by their mind and become free of it.

pAlunIru nErparichi pAlalO-
nOlanADe nide voka haMsA
pAlupaDina yI paramahaMsamula-
vOli nunnadide voka haMsA
||dibbalu||

Word to word meaning: పాలు (pAlu) = milk;  నీరు (nIru) = water;  నేర్పరచి (nErparichi) = separated;  పాలలో (pAlalO) = in the milk; నోలలాడె  (nOlanADe ) నిదె (nide) =   యొక హంస (voka haMsA) = పాలు పడిన (pAlupaDina) =  to under take; to own;  యీ (yI) =  these;  పరమహంసముల (paramahaMsamula) = great sages;  ఓలి నున్నది (vOli nunnadi) = looks alike; ఇదె (ide) = this, యొక హంస (voka haMsA) = one swan.

Literal Meaning: One Swan separated milk and water, enjoyed milk all the time. Another Swan took its place in the minds of great sages. And yet, all the Swans look the same.

Implied Meaning: The consideration of good and bad acts is for the ordinary. The great men don’t differentiate between good and bad, but avoid them altogether. Yet all men look the same.

Comments: The definitive views on virtuous and sinful deeds, Annamacharya  says are still acts of differentiation of the self and the environment. The liberated souls ostracised this deliberation altogether. Yet all men look the same. (Please refer to the wordings పొనిగితేఁ బాపమేది -పుణ్యమేది కర్మమందు వొనర ఫలమొల్లవి – యోగికిని in the verse తెలిసితే మోక్షము, which means the same as above explanation). Further it is also referring the following Bhagavad-Gita shloka which also signify the same.

nādatte kasyachit pāpaṁ na chaiva sukṛitaṁ vibhuḥ
ajñānenāvṛitaṁ jñānaṁ tena muhyanti jantavaḥ (5-15)

Purport: The omnipresent God does not involve/ acknowledge/ appropriate Himself in the sinful or virtuous deeds of anyone. The living entities are bewidlered because their inner knowledge is covered by ignorance. (Hence they get engaged in numerous activities.)

nuDugaka podigI noka haMsA
kaDuvEDuka vEMkaTagiri mIdaTa-
noDalu peMchenide yoka haMsA
||dibbalu||

Word to word meaning: తడవి (taDavi) = caressing; రోమరంధ్రంబుల (rOmaraMdhraMbula) = genital organs; గ్రుడ్లను (gruDlanu) =eggs; ఉడుగక (uDugaka) = continuously; పొదిగీను (podigInu) = hatching; ఒక హంస (oka haMsA) = one swan; కడు వేడుక (kaDuvEDuka) = With great interest/devotion; వేంకటగిరి మీదట  (vEMkaTagiri mIdaTa) = on God (the seven of hills); నొడలు పెంచెనిదె = ఒడలు పెంచెను ఇదె =   ఒడలుప్పొంగు ఇదె (oDalu peMchenide)అపరిమితమైన  ఆనందము కలుగు = get ecstasy; ఒక హంస (yoka haMsA) = one swan.

Literal Meaning: one swan continually caressed the genital organs and (successfully) hatched eggs. Still, one swan submitted with great devotion to Lord of VeEMkaTagiri and got ecstasy.

Implied Meaning: Certain (or most) people continuously engaged in sensual pleasures and expanded the family & world. Further, there existed men, who elated with exceptional devotion and surrendered to GOD.

Comments: Annamacharya says most beings spend their time completely in expansion of the family and their self-interests. This includes so called sinful and virtuous deeds. He says we need a paradigm shift beyond all the worldly pursuits to get engaged with God.
