Word to Word meaning: జీవాతుమై (jIvAtumai) living soul; యుండు
= ఉండు (yuMDu= uMDu) =being చిలుకా (chilukA)
= oh! Parrot; నీవు (nIvu) = you; ఆవలికి (Avaliki)
= that side (after death) పరమాత్ముఁడై (paramAtmuDai) = superior soul (god); యుండు (yuMDu) = being; చిలుకా

Literal
meaning: Oh!! Parrot!! You the living soul will be merged into god
on the other side (after death).
Implied
meaning: Oh Parrot! Understand that you remain now and after death with the
God.

Word to Word meaning: ఆతుమపంజరములోన (AtumapaMjaramulOna) = being caged in the atma (self-feeling); నయమున (nayamuna) = easily, softly, comforting; నుండి = nuMDi) = staying; నా చేతనే (nAchEtanE) = only by
myself; పెరిగిన (perigina) = brought up; చిలుకా (chilukA) = Oh parrot; జాతిగాఁ (jAtigA) = breed to; కర్మపు garmapu) perform work సంకెళ్ళఁబడి (saMkeLLabaDi) = got into chains; కాలఁ జేతఁ = కాలఁ చేతఁ (kAla-jEta) by the action (Illusion) of time; బేదైతివే =పేదైతివే (bEdaitivE = pEdaitivE) reduced to poor, lost lustre; చిలుకా (chilukA) = Oh parrot; భాతిగాఁ (bhAtigA) = appearently; చదువులు (jaduvulu) = education, training; పగలురేలును (pagalurElunu) = both day and night; నా చేత (nA chEta) = by myself; నేరిచినట్టి (nErichinaTTi) = learnt; చిలుకా (chilukA) = Oh parrot; రీతిగా (rItigA) =methodically దేహంపు (dEhaMpu) = of the body; రెక్కలచాటున (rekkalachATuna) = stand behind effort of hands నుండి (nuMDi) kOruvalEni staying సీతుకు (sItuku) = from cold winter season, ఓరువలేని (OruvalEni) = unable to bear; చిలుకా (chilukA) = Oh!
Parrot
Literal Meaning: Being caged in the feeling of self & body, you have grown by
deriving comfort by performing the work (of daily chores); in the process created
chains of bonds. And by the action of
time, you lost lustre (less intelligent). Apparently all along this life (day
and night), you are trained (what so ever) and methodically adjusted yourself
as per my wishes. Yet you don't take the flight of liberty for you fear the
harsh seasons.
Comments: Annamacharya has compressed many ideas in to this stanza. They
are:
- 1. We don’t realise that the body and the soul are one and the
same.
- 2. Our thinking is shaped by our experiences. This reinforces the
feeling of self.
- 3. By engaging in the chores of life, we lose our sensitivity.
- 4. Soul derives comfort in the cage of the body and the ego works
as per its wishes.
- 5. We don’t take the flight of liberty for fear of facing unknown territory.

= ten thousand; వదరులు (vadarulu) = meaningless words; వదరేటి (vadarETi) = prattle; చిలుకా (chilukA)
= Oh parrot; తుదలేని (tudalEni) = which have no end; మమతలు (mamatalu) = affection (s); తోరమ్ము (tOrammu) = స్థూలము Large, bulky,
thick, fat, చేసి (sEsi = chEsi) = having done; నాతోఁ (nAtO) = along with me; గూడి
(gUDi) = joined; మెలగిన (melagina)
= conducted; చిలుకా (chilukA) = Oh parrot.
Literal meaning:
Being afraid of disturbing the five (senses), you dissipate yourself; you win
over all enemies except those six ones (కామ, క్రోధ, మోహ, లోభ, మద, మాత్సర్యాలు
want, anger, infatuation, avarice, arrogance and envy). You are so consumed by
taste for good food; you do not stop to prattle. Along with me you had
conducted (all the time), but you keep accruing the affection.
Implied
meaning: Oh parrot!! You lived by submitting to the five senses. You may be able
to put down all your enemies except those six critical ones (కామ, క్రోధ, మోహ, లోభ, మద, మాత్సర్యాలు want, anger, infatuation,
avarice, arrogance and envy). You are so consumed that you never stopped to chatter about good
food. Forever you are getting hooked by multiple unfathomable bondages you
created during the course of life.
Comments: Apart
from the meaning explained here, it is worth to quote what Prahlada said to Hiranyakashipu
here. (Hiranyakashipu was the strongest person of his times. He conquered all
the temporal worlds and heaven.)
ఉ. లోకము లన్నియున్ గడియలోన జయించినవాఁడ వింద్రియా
Purport: “There is no doubt that you are so strong that none in the world could stand up to you. Yet you failed to conquer your mind. Those six enemies (want, anger, infatuation, avarice, arrogance and envy) had so prevailed upon you that you don’t need an enemy. (You are enemy to yourself). Kindly have a careful relook.”

(sEviMchu koni) = by prayer; by submitting; గట్టి (gaTTi) = steadfast, Strong determination; చిలుకా (chilukA) = Oh parrot; దైవమానుషములు (daivamAnushamulu) = God and men; తలఁపించి (talapiMchi) =To remind of; ఎపుడు (yepuDu) = all the time; నా
(nA) = my; తలఁపున (talapuna) = thinking, reflections; బాయని = పాయని Constantly,
without intermission; చిలుకా (chilukA) = Oh parrot; ఏవియును (yEviyunu) = none; నిజముగా (nijamugA)
= truly; వివి యేఁటికని (viviyETikani) = what these things are for; నాకు (nAku)
= to me ఎఱిఁగించిన (ne~ragiMchina = e~ragiMchina) = make understand; అటువంటి (aTuvaMTi)
= like that, such చిలుకా (chilukA) = Oh parrot.
Implied meaning:
Ultimately, who are you? Who am I? When perceived holistically, truly you are
same as me. You must hold on to the lord of the seven hills in your mind and
heart with strong determination. By your constant association, I understand (aware,
appreciate) what God is and what man is.
Implied
meaning: Who you are, who am I; truly speaking you and I are one and the
same. You always reminded me of what God is, what man is, in my reflections. With
the grace of GOD, now I discern why these things are as they appear. (I
understand the Devine Order)
Comments: This stanza is very interesting. Who this
verse is addressing? Who is the observer?
Is it the self? Is It the memory of knowledge? However, it is important to note that both the
questioner and questioned are from the same person. (Annamacharya is hinting that observed and observer are
same...ref Jiddu Krishnamurthi's words).
